SALEM - The 2009 Legislature's first fee increase - a raise in the cost of real estate paperwork to help expand low-income housing assistance - cleared the state House on Tuesday.
The proposal, which passed 44-15, now awaits Senate approval.
It raises from $11 to $26 the fee for each real estate document recorded at a county clerk's office. The fee increase would apply to such documents as deeds, mortgage records, liens and judgment records.
The resulting state revenue would be administered by the state Housing and Community Services Department. Initially, it would generate about $15 million in ...
