SALEM - The 2009 Legislature's first fee increase - a raise in the cost of real estate paperwork to help expand low-income housing assistance - cleared the state House on Tuesday.

The proposal, which passed 44-15, now awaits Senate approval.

It raises from $11 to $26 the fee for each real estate document recorded at a county clerk's office. The fee increase would apply to such documents as deeds, mortgage records, liens and judgment records.
