Of course the state Department of Agriculture should listen to public concerns about aerial spraying to stop a gypsy moth infestation in southeast Eugene, and accommodate requests for modifications to the greatest extent possible. But the department should not be deflected from its goal of eradicating this foliage-devouring pest, a goal that deserves full public support. Unless the gypsy moth is stamped out when it first appears, Oregon will face the prospect of a far more extensive and expensive campaign, involving less benign insecticides and with fewer assurances of success.
