For a few hours Thursday, students at Eastern Virginia Medical School traded their stethoscopes and textbooks for swashbuckling swords and laser guns.
They weren't in the operating room, thank goodness, but in Lewis Hall for a rare day of festivity - with a "Heroes and Villains" theme - to find out where they would perform their medical residencies.
Dressed in costume, the 104 EVMS seniors were among a record-breaking 30,000 applicants across the country in an annual rite of passage called Match Day. About half the applicants are fourth-year students in U.S. medical schools.
