Stock Market Income Plays Big Role in Making Money for Larger Hospitals
On paper at least, St. Edward Mercy Medical Center in Fort Smith was the state's most profitable hospital with a net profit of $19.5 million for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1996.
According to Medicare cost reports filed annually by the state's hospitals, St. Edward profited more than any other facility, edging out the former leader, Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock.
Not to detract from the 368-bed hospital's financial success, but a significant portion of the hospital's bottom line came from nearly $10 million in investment gains. Unlike most individual investors, ...
