Toyota plans rear-seat airbag

TOKYO Toyota Motor Corp. has developed an airbag that deploys between rear-seat passengers and will install it on a model to be launched in Japan.

The airbag inflates from a rear-seat center console during side collisions. The idea is to stop rear-seat passengers from knocking against each other or the console.

Toyota said the airbag will appear soon on a Japan-market vehicle. It did not name the vehicle, but the redesigned Crown Majesta luxury sedan is scheduled to debut March 27.
