Contact reactions of the skin include allergic Contact dermatitis, irritant contact dermatitis, allergic and nonimmunologic contact urticaria, photoallergic and phototoxic dermatitis, and a few other esoteric reactions. Allergic contact dermatitis is extremely common, and it is the reason many patients with eczemas fail to respond to treatment. The underlying stimulus for allergic contact dermatitis may be an ingredient of anything from our clothing to medications used to treat another rash. To cure the problem, we must find the cause and eliminate it. Patch testing helps us do this.
