DROPPING THE NO. 4 yellow-jacket popper in the thigh-deep run, I watched expectantly as it drifted down the New River. Languidly, a muscular bronze form floated up from below, hovered inches away, then sipped the bug in with a powerful flare of its jaws.
Of thousands of memories of game-fish eating flies, none remain as clear in my mind's eye as that smallmouth. The water was crystalline, the current strong, the fish discriminating, and the take just 20 feet from the boat. The fight that ensued helped make the rise memorable, too. A 5 2/3-pound smallmouth in a swift river is no slouch. And there's no more engaging way to challenge these fish than with a flyrod.
