The versatile electron-beam evaporation system can be programmed to minimize tunneling, column formation, and film defects.
"If we had the money to do it, I would take out all of the e-guns we've got now and put in nothing but e-Vaps," says Rudy Frank, manager of the coatings lab at Opti-Forms, Temecula, Calif., after installing an e-Vap electron-beam evaporation system in the company's newest coating chamber.
This endorsement bespeaks frustration as much as anything else, since depositing high-performance optical coatings can be tricky. Although electron-beam evaporation seems straightforward, it actually involves a careful balancing of opposing tendencies.
