KOEBERG is looking forward to a hefty R1.64 billion maintenance boost that will increase the station's power output.

Although Eskom says the cash in-jection will enhance the nuclear power station's reliability, the reality is that the project is likely to get under way only in 18 months at the earliest.

French power company Alstom was recently awarded the huge contract to retrofit the low-pressure turbines of Koeberg's two 970MW units.

A retrofit is the addition of a component or accessory to something that did not have it when it was manufactured.
