Positioned in the hub of Durban's sprawling city, the Botanic Gardens are an oasis of sorts - they provide a green sanctuary for the jaded city slickers who live around them.
However, the gardens are not just pretty to look at. "Not only are botanic gardens important in connecting people with plants, they are also vital in maintaining the Earth's self-regulatory system and halting the onward march of climate change," said Julia Willison, head of education at Botanic Gardens Conservation International, Kew Gardens in the UK.
