Introduction

High levels of biodiversity and endemism are the Caribbean region's most highly valued natural resources, both on land (Myers et al. 2000) and in the ocean (Roberts et al. 2002). For many Caribbean islands, marine resources have long been one cornerstone for subsistence living and, as economies have developed, a regional market good (Munro 1983a; Jackson 1997). Coral reefs and mangroves provide artisanal and commercial fishing grounds (Munro 1983a), serve as important fish nurseries (Beck et al, 2001), and provide storm protection (Moberg and Folke 1999).
