Jul. 21--A plan to bribe federal inspectors and smuggle tons of potentially rancid seafood and vegetables into the Bay Area has resulted in criminal charges against eight Bay Area importers of produce from the Far East.
The importers, including the owners of a San Jose-based trading company, were arrested this week in connection with allegations that they attempted to evade Food and Drug Administration inspections of large shipments of seafood, fish and vegetables that for the most part would be sold to Asian restaurants in San Francisco and Oakland.
