There are many ways in which Generation Kill ( Warner Home Video, [pounds sterling]39.14 inc p& p 01634 832789, out now) steers away from the cliches associated with drama about armed combat. Perhaps the most noticeable is that it has dispensed with a soundtrack. We get no rousing strings, no fanfare, just the hum and click of radio static, and soldiers' voices: a fittingly stark beginning to a mini-series that makes Cross Of Iron resemble Gone With The Wind.
Generation Kill is brought to us by Ed Burns and David Simon, the creative team behind The Wire, and, like The Wire, it concerns young men forced to act like hard-bitten grownups ...
