Comprehensive school health education has received significant visibility through numerous national, state, and local initiatives. Healthy People 2000,[1] a nationwide commitment to health promotion and disease prevention, includes specific objectives which fall within the framework of K-12 comprehensive school health education. Objective 8.4 underscores the importance of comprehensive school health education:
Increase to at least 75% the proportion of the nation's schools that provide planned and sequential kindergarten through twelfth grade quality school health education.[2]
