For more than a decade, Oregon was the only state with a physician-assisted suicide law. It was a lonely position that drew fierce attacks from opponents ranging from the Catholic Church and the U.S. Justice Department to the American Medical Association and the Republican leadership in Congress.
Now, Oregon is no longer alone in allowing doctors to prescribe lethal medication to terminal patients. On Thursday, assisted suicide became legal in Washington - the first state to follow Oregon's lead since the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2006 that states had a right to adopt such measures.
