Each year, after a long, cold winter, unmistakable signs of spring begin to appear in America's backyards: robins gathering twigs for their nests . . . crocuses pushing up through the ground and into bloom . . . and homeowners setting up their outdoor furniture in anticipation of the coming season of barbecues, lawn parties and just plain relaxation in the soft summer air.
