Joey couldn't wait for recess to show his friend Duncan the new game he'd made up. But Duncan looked too sad to play.
"What's wrong?" Joey asked.
"I need to find a place to stay tonight."
Joey knew that Duncan had a nice room with a comfortable bed. "Why not at home?" he asked.
"My mom went out of town today because my grandma's sick," Duncan said. "My dad works at night, so he wants me to stay with my aunt. But she lives way across town. I'll have to get up extra early and will probably be late for school. You think I can stay at your house?"
"I'm not sure," Joey said slowly.
Duncan's face got sadder.
