Toshiba, which was badly defeated by Sony in the HD video race, wants to make sure it's a dominant player in the next great consumer video cycle--delivering video over the Net directly to the TV set on the living room.
It has announced what it calls a Netplayer, which, like an Apple TV or Vudu box is connected to a TV set and to the Internet. It receives video streams from the Net or from a PC and displays them on the TV.
Toshiba says its Netplayer, which has a built-in DVD player (no, definitely not a Blu-ray player!) is the first non-TV device to support the Yahoo Widget TV platform.
