Legends of Rock Guitar [Hal Leonard] is a good book poorly named. If the title suggests that all it has to offer are warmed-over bios of Bo Diddley and Jimmy Page, look again. Many players whose careers are critiqued here are indeed legends by anyone's standards, from Duane Eddy to Duane Allman, but most are not. The subhead comes closer--The Essential Reference of Rock's Greatest Guitarists--but even still, the book has to be cracked open before its substantial value can be appreciated. (Ace Frehley does not spring to mind as one of "rock's greatest guitarists," and there's nothing legendary about Tony MacAlpine, who is nevertheless an exceptional and worthy player.) ...
