There is hardly a more established sample of western European countries within the field of 'paired case-studies' than that including the two Alpine republics of Austria and Switzerland. Compared with the great attention political science has paid to many other sections of the socio-economic and institutional systems in Austria and Switzerland,(1) truly comparative studies of party politics in the two countries have so far however remained rather underdeveloped. This holds true especially with regard to the comparative study of right-wing populist parties as one of the most discussed subjects of the more recent research literature on political parties.
