Aug. 9--Passengers at Bush Field could pay an extra $1 to $3 to help cover the cost of a $22 million renovation of the terminal.

On Friday, the Augusta Aviation Commission voted to get bids from consultants who would study the issue and seek Federal Aviation Administration approval to levy the tax. The same consulting firm would also study whether the airport can afford the full $22 million project.

Airport Director Albert McDill estimated the consultant would cost the airport $100,000 to study the terminal's income potential and handle the paperwork for the tax. Getting the tax approved and added to tickets could take a year, he said.
