The introduction of an emissions trading scheme will probably be delayed as New Zealand more closely aligns itself with Australia, Agriculture Minister David Carter says. Prime Minister John Key and his Australian counterpart, Kevin Rudd, this month agreed to "harmonise" emissions reduction regimes.

A parliamentary select committee, headed by United Future leader Peter Dunne, is reviewing the scheme. Its findings are not expected until at least May. Carter said that would potentially delay the introduction of a scheme in New Zealand.
