Last year was the 100th anniversary of the first public showing of movies in the United States. This year is the 70th anniversary of ``The Jazz Singer,'' the Al Jolson film that helped usher in the talkies.
Regrettably, the so-called silent era of American movies is quickly receding into the distant past.
