Early Life: Alan Donald Whicker was born in 1925 in Cairo. His father died when he was three, and he was raised by his mother in Hampstead. During the Second World War he was commissioned as an officer in the Devonshire Regiment of the British Army. He was a captain by 1943, and joined the Army Film and Photo Unit in Italy the same year.
