The ketogenic diet has been used to treat epilepsy since the 1920s. The advent of effective anti-convulsant medications in the 1950s made the ketogenic diet a less appealing treatment option, but it is still a viable one in cases of intractable seizure disorders or when medications cause intolerable side effects.
Recently, the public has expressed a renewed interest in fasting and popular diets using ketosis, such as the Atkins Diet Revolution. These popular diets should not be confused with ketogenic diet.
