SPRINGFIELD - The future of Springfield's road fund will soon lie in the hands of its voters.
The City Council Monday night decided to slash its proposed gas tax increase in half - from 4 cents a gallon to 2 cents a gallon - and send the entire proposal to the May ballot.
Recent public testimony against a 4-cent hike, and a promise by the Oregon Petroleum Association to collect the 1,113 signatures needed to refer the tax to voters, spurred the council to pre-emptive action.
