SPRINGFIELD - Though the meeting was planned for months, the tragic death of 17-year-old Sherry Varo - who was struck and killed by two cars last week as she crossed Main Street on foot at 51st Street - made the mission of making that roadway safer seem all the more urgent.
City leaders met with state Department of Transportation officials Monday night to discuss the creation of a pedestrian safety study to reduce the number of people struck and killed or injured on the state highway.
ODOT, which maintains and controls Main Street, will study the roadway from 21st Street to the eastern city limits, ...
