Article: TRW Delivers Innovative Solar Array: Flexible Blanket GaAs/Ge Solar Array May Be Forerunner of New Powerful, Lightweight Arrays.

REDONDO BEACH, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 26, 1997--An innovative solar array, delivered by TRW Inc. to Lockheed Martin for integration onto NASA's Earth Observing System AM-1 (EOS AM-1) spacecraft, may serve as a forerunner for a new generation of lightweight, high-power solar arrays.

Weighing only 160 pounds with its harnesses (396 pounds for the entire assembly including deployment mechanisms and holding container), the solar array blanket will provide 7.5 kilowatts of energy at 127 volts to the satellite at the beginning of life -- or enough power to operate the 11,000-pound EOS AM-1 spacecraft and its instruments for five years.
