As noted by Harry Haskell, twentieth-century composers have produced works for antique instruments since the very beginning of the early music revival at the turn of the century (The Early Music Revival [London: Thames & Hudson, 1988]). The instruments chosen for these experiments have varied depending on a number of factors. In the earliest years, these were often archaic string instruments, especially the viola da gamba and viola d'amore.
