Pierre Boulez has won his reputation as one of the finest and most challenging post-World War II composers in the Western musical tradition on the basis of compositions such as Pli selon pli and cummings ist der Dichter. Don, the first of five movements comprising Pli selon pli, was premiered in 1962 and first published in 1967. The first performance of cummings ist der Dichter occurred in 1970 in a version for a mixed choir of sixteen voices and chamber orchestra; the score was published in 1976.
