SIEM REAP, Cambodia _ There is little to disturb the stillness of an ancient Buddhist temple hidden in the embrace of the jungle near Angkor Wat.
Cottonsilk trees rustle in a light breeze. An insect buzzes lazily by; a faraway rooster crows. A policeman's footsteps echo off towering stone carvings at the legendary, 800-year-old temple complex.
The guard, a 24-year-old man named Hun, a rifle slung over his shoulder, escorts a lone visitor through quiet courtyards usually filled with camera-laden tourists. Inside a stone tower, he slaps his chest with an open palm, slowly, again and again. The beating sounds like a timpani.
