NEW YORK -- Heavy, chunky yarns signaling a return of bulky sweaters for fall '98 were the newest fashion trend at Yarn Fair International, which ended its three-day run Thursday at the Hilton hotel here.
Among the show's 100-plus yarn exhibitors this move to thicker yarns, including tweedy types, was clearly visible in sample sweaters and knit swatches with the most extreme examples showing huge fancy slubs. But at the other extreme, some of the international spinners were offering fine yarns that were shown in flat, smooth, fine-gauge knits like lightweight jerseys as well as open-work knits looking more like summer than fall.
