Lost the plot
My mother liked things simple. She liked to know where she stood. She wanted to know what had just happened, and what was going to happen. She liked a plan. Or, in the case of a TV series or a book, a plot.
She would not have liked The Wire, or Lost, or Battlestar Gallactica, or any of the new generation of TV series that pride themselves on being difficult to understand.
She did, however, like her TV. When we were growing up, the comforting regularity of sitting down at a certain time on a certain night of the week to watch, say, When The Boat Comes In, or Brideshead Revisited, was ...
