In a bid to slash labor costs and stand up to the competition in Southeast Asia, the Italian textile and apparel manufacturer Miroglio has built two tex- tile plants -- not in a poor, faraway country, but in southern Italy, where jobs are scarce and labor costs are low.
Earlier this summer, Miroglio, based in Alba, in the wealthy northern region of Piedmont, inaugurated Filatura e Tessitura di Puglia, two spinning and weaving plants near this port, a city hit hard by the recession that began at the start of the decade.
