In Europe and the US the chemical industry has performed consistently well over the 50 years since World War II. The UK component is a major player and has enjoyed better fortunes in international competitiveness than most other sectors of the British manufacturing industry. Good fortune may have played a part but a great deal of credit must go to leadership and sound management over the years. The other distinguishing feature has been its investment in, and successful exploitation of, research and development. Thus the management of R&D in the chemical industry is a topic of importance and of great interest.
