Want a really compact guitar that doesn't feel or sound like a ukulele? Tacoma's P1 Papoose ($399; $479 with Fishman Matrix pickup) may be the answer. This pint-sized ax is only 301/2" long, but its bolt-on Honduran mahogany neck packs a 19"-scale rosewood fingerboard that measures 113/16" at the nut and 21/8" at the 12th fret -- essentially the width of a Martin D-28. The 21 frets are closer together than standard, but the nicely shaped neck is extremely playable. Fretwork could be better: The crowns are flat and unpolished, and we noticed a couple of high spots. Trussrod and neck-tilt adjusters are provided.
