NEW YORK _ When Pete Sampras commits as many unforced errors as a bumbling minor league baseball team, it is clear the two-time defending U.S. Open champion is in trouble.
Sampras' projected march to within one of Roy Emerson's record 12 Grand Slam tournament titles was sidetracked Monday night as 15th-seeded Petr Korda rocked the top-seeded Sampras, 6-7 (4-7), 7-5, 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), in the Round of 16.
Dragged down by 66 unforced errors, Sampras saw his bid for a fifth U.S. Open title dynamited. Sampras committed 19 unforced errors in the final set, compared to 11 for Korda. The Czech's match total was a reasonable 45.
