Outer Banks, N.C. -- North Carolina legislators have proposed building a second jetty at Oregon Inlet, one of the few breaches in the hundred-mile-long series of barrier islands called the Outer Banks that make Cape Hatteras National Seashore so distinctive. Recreational and commercial boaters use the inlet to pass from Pamlico Sound to the Atlantic Ocean. The inlet is spanned by a bridge on State Highway 12.
Several years ago, a first jetty was built on the southern side of Oregon Inlet. To build this proposed counterpart on the north side, the state would have to condemn part of Cape Hatteras National Seashore. State legislators from the region want the jetty ...
