On February 12, 1996, a small square of ancient history came to live with us: a reddish-fawn, black-faced Russian puppy with docked ears and tail. Her breeders named her Shenel because her puppy coat was the grey of the Russian soldiers' overcoats. By the time she arrived in Oklahoma at eight weeks of age, Shenel's color had become a soft fawn. Although only eight weeks old, Shenel arrived with the instincts and wisdom of her ancestors copied in her DNA.
