My husband and I just had to respond to Mr. Miller's trade against draft animals (81/2:52). We have a 13-year-old Percheron mare with whom (and her late sister) we have done a large variety of work and public functions. Gail Damerow dealt with much of his article, but we wanted to clarify a few things.
First, how large a horse or small a bale is he talking about? An actual draft breed horse requires about 20-30 lbs. per day of decent hay -- about 4-6 tons per year if eating it all year. With our 2-wire, 70 lb. bales, that comes out to 180 bales, max. Even with our cold Wyoming winters, we still have at least four months of grazing here. A milder, wetter climate ...
