In this book Christine Trevett outlines the historical development of the religious movement known as Montanism (also known as "The Prophecy") within Christianity during the 2nd century. Despite the limitations of the historical data, Trevett is able to piece together a picture of Montanism which considers the beginnings of the movement, its key figures (particularly Tertullian), and its teachings and practices (fasting and celibacy, for example). One chapter is devoted entirely to a consideration of the role of women in the development of Montanism. The book ends with a discussion of the eventual and gradual demise of Montanism.
