TOKYO, April 8 Asia Pulse - Japan's Gunze Ltd. (TSE:3002) has developed a biodegradable artificial pericardium material that will completely dissolve some three months after heart surgery.
The pericardium, or the membrane sac that encloses the heart, must be cut open to access the heart for surgery.
If the opening is not closed with an artificial material after surgery, the pericardium at the wound site can adhere to the sternum during healing. If further heart surgery is required, as is often the case, the need to separate the pericardium from the sternum can add many hours to the procedure.
