BENTONVILLE, Ark. -- One of the most frequent criticisms of the nation's health care system is its technological backwardness.

As a first step toward remedying that weakness, Wal-Mart in 2006 partnered with several other major employers to form a nonprofit organization dubbed Dossia to develop a system of electronic personalized health records (PHRs). Other participating companies included Intel, BP (formerly British Petroleum), Pitney Bowes Inc., Applied Materials Inc. and Cardinal Health Inc.
