Introduction

Anadromous alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus) are of notable ecological, economic, and historical importance in eastern North America. They impact freshwater ecosystems by importing marine-derived nutrients (Durbin et al. 1979; Garman and Macko 1998; MacAvoy et al. 2000) and structuring prey communities through predation (Post et al. 2008). The inshore fishery for anadromous alewives dates to precolonial times, and the offshore fishery, still a large source of bait for Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) and American lobster (Homarus americanus) fishermen, once landed nearly 25 000 mt annually (Munroe 2002).
