Introduction
Pine voles (Microtus pinetorum (LeConte, 1830)) are semifossorial, arvicoline rodents found in woodlands and numerous other habitats of the eastern United States (Whitaker and Hamilton 1998). They are common pests in orchards, where considerable research has been conducted on the negative impacts of their herbivory on roots of apple trees (e.g., Fisher and Anthony 1980; Wysolmerski et al. 1980; Lapasha and Powell 1994). Far less is known about the ecological role of pine voles in relation to natural plant communities, aside from basic life-history observations and feeding notes (Hamilton 1938; Benton 1955; Miller and Getz 1969).
