Nursing diagnosis constitutes the basis for the care planning process for a specific individual, and thus determines the care needs in nursing practice. When identifying a health problem for which she or he is responsible from a therapeutic point of view and establishing its possible etiology, the nurse is formulating a nursing diagnosis (Gordon, 1976; Carpenito, 1990; Kim, McFarland, & McLane, 1990; Alfaro, 1992).
