Sep. 18--Under a "precedent-setting" agreement with the Federal Trade Commission, Exxon Corp. is airing new TV ads that may be interpreted as: Disregard old gasoline ads and collectively save yourselves a lot of money.
Ads from many big oil companies used to urge motorists to fill up with expensive grades of high-octane fuel under the guise that using high-test instead of regular gas would lead to better performance and prolong the life of the car.
The Exxon TV ads, which underwent FTC review, began airing this month with a different message: "Most cars will run properly on regular octane."
The new ads are the result of an agreement ...
