When the announcement of an enormous Prudhoe Bay discovery well was made by Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO) amd Humble Oil and Refining Company (now Exxon Company, U.S.A.) in 1968, you can be sure that a pilot light was lit in the heart of every person working on the pipeline industry. And what better place for all of that "black gold" to be hiding, than in Alaska, which means "the greatland"?
Workers on the project described their experiences to Pipeline & Gas Journal as frustrating, difficult, challenging, a "learning experience" and finally a "logistical nightmare." Yet all said they would gladly do it all over again.
