COLUMN: IN OUR OPINION
Human ingenuity has harnessed the power of running water for eons, and few places exhibit the value and importance of that power better than New England, where rivers such as the Merrimack and Blackstone have long been placed in the service of industry. Textile manufacturing built cities such as Lawrence and Lowell, and was important for the growth of many smaller towns, such as those in the Blackstone Valley.
The hydropower tradition remains alive and well locally, much to the credit of businesses and enterprises who are keeping one eye on economics and another on nature.
