Sep. 21--Susan Cooper began her career as a stewardess, a job in which she and other women were prohibited from getting married and watched carefully to make sure they didn't gain weight. Cooper's usual customers were well-off business travelers, almost all men.

As she now ends her career, more than 30 years later, the job of flight attendant is one held by both men and women, and the profession is tackling tough issues like dealing with unruly and aggressive passengers.
